No Need for CGFNS in Michigan

17 06 2007

The State of Michigan has recently passed a law doing away with the requirement of CGFNS for foreign-educated nurses.  Michiganvotes reports as follows:

Introduced by Rep. Hoon-Yung Hopgood on February 7, 2007, to eliminate the current requirement that foreign-educated nurses be certified by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) before taking a standardized national examination that is already used by the state nursing board (the National Council of State Boards of Nursing test). Reportedly, the CGFNS certification process has become redundant. The bill would also a foreign-educated applicant to be licensed if they meet this requirement and are or have been licensed or registered in another state or country, jurisdiction, territory, and province where they are or had been licensed or registered .

The bill was passed into law last June 14, 2007.  This brings a total of 22 states which have done away with the CGFNS requirement.

Last March 2007, CGFNS had announced that it has partnered with Kaplan to offer review classes for CGFNS and NCLEX.  It seems CGFNS has realized the impact of the dropping of its exam as part of the requirement for immigrating to the US.  Needless to state, nurses would rather have one less exam to worry about.
